So, you want to get a Big Bore? Part 1 …

Picture a classic African safari, and one of the first images that pops into your mind is a khaki-clad hunter toting a big bore double or bolt action rifle over his or her shoulder, in pursuit of things that bite, scratch, bulldoze and stomp. Though once almost forgotten, except by a few, due to the lack of ammunition since the 1970s when the supply of Kynoch ammunition ran out, the interest in big bore rifles is at an all-time high. Since the 80s, the big bore rifle has made a major comeback. Bullet, brass and ammunition suppliers started producing excellent products for the shooter, and the interest picked up again almost overnight. A plethora of manufacturers now offer big bore rifles, reloading equipment and components – a very happy state of affairs!

Before we continue, let’s look at the definition of a “big bore”. Opinions and reasons abound, with much being written on the subject (and quite a few heated debates…). Personally, and mostly for the sake of simplicity, I draw the line at the venerable .375, in any of its guises. In most countries it is the minimum legal caliber required to
