LABOUR-SAVING ELECTRICS

After suffering with a long-term, shoulder problem, I decided that it would make life with my 1947 Land Utility E27N a good deal easier if I fitted it with an electric starting system, as well as a few other goodies. I got cracking with the project in 2016, and began by studying a friend’s battery tray, then fabricating one of my own using metal angle and flat strip.

I already had a suitable but used starter motor ‘on the shelf’, so renewed its oil seal and cleaned-up the internals. A subsequent test revealed that it was functioning well, so I then fitted it to the tractor, with a new gasket. I purchased a suitable battery from my local, car accessory shop (Belper Auto Tech, tel: 01773 829992) who, initially, wanted to sell me a white-cased battery.
