ASK GF
Sex and body
Answered by Family Planning NSW associate medical director Dr Clare Boerma.
Should I always pee after having sex? My bestie said you can get an infection unless you do it after every time! And she said you should never wee before sex. Why? Lulu*
It’s possible that urinating after sex may help to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). This is because the opening of the urethra (the tube that allows you to release urine from the bladder) sits just above the vaginal opening. If bacteria from other body areas (like from around your bottom) are transferred to the urethra during sex, they may be flushed out with urinating before they can cause infection. However, this is not compulsory. It doesn’t always work, and some women do not get issues with these infections. Passing urine before sex is not essential either! It may make sex more comfortable if you don’t have a full bladder, but just do whatever feels best.
