This year, my best friend and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary of living together. Twenty years in a relationship that, for a long time, I have struggled to describe. We are friends, companions, emotional but not sexual intimates, and we’ve built a partnership that shares attributes with traditional marriage, open marriage and polyamory.
I first met Susie in 1995, when I abandoned my fledgling career as a jobbing actor to move to Edinburgh with my then-boyfriend. He and I rented a room in Susie’s flat for our first nine months. I felt an instant connection, and we soon became good friends. Even when my partner and I moved out, our friendship continued.
