that became The Who got their start in London in 1959, while The Beatles were still The Quarry Men. In spring 1964, they attained to their classic lineup consisting of Daltrey, Townshend, Entwistle and Moon. After recording a failed single using the name “The High Numbers,” The Who failed to attract any British record label to a recording contract until they recorded “I Can’t Explain” and “Bald Headed Woman” in early to mid-November. They were picked up by Decca (USA), which became their first regular label. By December that they would be releasing “a single by a group called The Who.” One week later, reviewed that single, identifying “Bald Headed Woman” as the A-side. The earliest labels accidentally ddropped the “h” from Townshend’s author credit for “I Can’t Explain” and show the B-side publisher as Duchess Music, but they corrected the errors quickly.
