Originating in Europe, sugared almonds or bonbonniere have been a popular choice for wedding favours for centuries. Couples would select five sugar-coated almonds for each guest, to symbolise health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity. The sweet treat is also said to represent the ups and downs of married life – the sugar represents the sweet, while the almond represents the bitter.
