What are carbs and can I eat them if I have diabetes?

Carbohydrates (carbs) include both starch and sugars in foods and drinks. When eaten, our body breaks them down to the single molecule glucose and releases it into our bloodstream, causing a rise in blood glucose levels (BGLS).

People living with, or at risk of, diabetes do not need to avoid carbs. Carbs are an essential source of energy for the body and are therefore a very important component of a healthy, balanced diet.
