South Africans are no strangers to summer thunderstorms over the central and eastern parts of the country. The thunderstorm season normally starts during mid-spring and continues until autumn. Occasionally, thunderstorms will also develop over the Western Cape winter rainfall area, but this is more rare.
It is less known that thunderstorms are often associated with the development of tornadoes. Over the past 10 years, about a dozen tornado-producing thunderstorms have been recorded, and with the availability of cell phones and social media, it is expected that this phenomenon will be more frequently recorded.
