    For South African potter Caroline Schulz Vieira, a body of work usually begins with an idea and some sketches. The idea could be born from a previous body of work, personal experiences or visual references. Born in Santiago, Chile, she emigrated with her parents to South Africa when she was 9 years old. She was educated at the German School in Pretoria. After matriculating she studied for a BA degree, majoring in Art History and German, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

    After 3 years of making pottery on an informal basis she went to Chile where she studied ceramics with Elsa Pfenniger. On her return to South Africa she completed a 2-year ceramic apprenticeship at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics. She established her own teaching studio in 1997.
