NEILAN was 12 years old when he learnt he had foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). From knee-high he had known he was different but never knew quite why. He suffered attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, poor co-ordination, language problems and learning disabilities. Both Neilan’s parents were alcoholics and his mother drank herself to an early grave, passing away from liver failure at the age of 49.
