Janet

Janet wakes pre-dawn and pulls on three-quarter pants, a cotton T-shirt from which the colour has long been bleached by the Hawke’s Bay sun, and woollen working socks that would look at home in a shearing gang.

She begins her day with yoga and pays her respects to the elm tree, which is at the geographical centre of the property, and also at its heart. She stands in the labyrinth and notices as the world around her turns from grey to pink. Watches the hawks on their morning flights over the neighbouring vineyards, listens as the rooster persistently heralds the new day, takes note of the morning, what the day will bring, and what jobs she’ll do in her perpetual dance with the weather.
