LEARN… THE ART OF calligraphy

Calligraphy – ‘the art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering’ – has a rich history spanning centuries and cultures; from the wall-writings of the Romans and ink-brushed fine art of China, to the monastic scripts of the Dark Ages and its modern revival during the early 20th-century’s Arts and Crafts movement. Its etymology captures perfectly its essence: the word is derived from the Greek kalligraphos, meaning ‘person who writes beautifully’.

Yet not many of us will ever learn how to ‘write’ beyond longhand at school, and as adults, we simply rely on keyboards or hurried scribbles to communicate day-to-day. But that’s not to say this age-old art form does not have a place in modern life.
