Let’s get this out of the way, right up front. In a life-or-death situation where you need to defend yourself against one or more assailants, a firearm is the preferred weapon of choice, all other things being equal. In any altercation, distance is your friend and being able to throw lead projectiles at high velocity from at least a few yards away is a great way to ensure you come out on the other end relatively unscathed.
For many users, a knife is a secondary weapon. It is a backup to a firearm. But the problem is, if the firearm fails, is lost, or is otherwise unavailable, then that backup becomes the new primary
