APA still deserves a nod

Thanks to Mike Virtanen for his in-depth coverage of conservation easements in the Adirondack Park (Sept./Oct. 2018). As reported, an impressive total of 781,000 acres are now protected by state-owned easements. This land stays in private ownership, most of it is managed on a sustainable basis for timber production, and almost none of it can be subdivided and developed.

I would, however, question Mike’s following assertion: “Between the easement lands and the forever-wild Forest Preserve, which contains 2.6 million acres, more than half of the Park is now protected in some fashion.” That is, 46 percent of the Park is state-owned Forest
