Upside down!

There are few things I like less on an early classic bike than modern forks. This is a recent perversion for ‘improving’ the handling of older bikes with newer suspension, including the ‘inverted’ or ‘upside-down’ front forks.

Even on my own favourite marque, the venerable Z1 family, I’ve seen upsidedownies and mono-shocks. I ride an old bike because I love the basic visceral feelings and quirks of riding an old bike. They were basic and simple, and I love that about them. I take the view that if I want a motorcycle that is faster and handles better then I will buy a more modern one. But, and it is a big but, there are many classics now that came shod with upside-down forks, so it is important for the fettler of classic bikes to know how to fix ’em.
