SEAFOOD IS ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE FOODS

– it’s incredibly versatile, succulent and loaded with lean protein and hearthealthy, brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids.

However, it’s not all good news when it comes to fish: Overfishing and irresponsible fishing practices have caused our oceans to suff er. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, an estimated 90% of the world's fisheries are either exploited or depleted. But there is still reason to be optimistic about the future of seafood. Christopher Costello, PhD, a professor of economics at the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara, says that some countries and fisheries have enacted sustainable fishing reforms that can improve fish stocks and result in healthier oceans. 3. Check Freshness Fish should be firm to the touch and, if whole, have eyes that are clear, not cloudy. It should smell like the ocean, but a slight fishy smell is common – simply rinse under cold water and pat dry. A strong ammonia or sour smell means you should not eat it.
